A joint venture between France’s Keolis and Spanish-owned Amey has won the franchise to run the Wales and Borders railway services. The contract for ther £5bn franchise begins in October and will last 15 years, with £700m being invested into South Wales Metro. KeolisAmey currently run the Docklands Light Railway in London.

The new Platov Airport designed by Twelve Architects has been completed, just in time for the 2018 Russia World Cup. The airport which will serve Rostov-on-Don, will be wowing football fans with it’s new international and domestic terminal and also it’s new hotel. According to Twelve Architects, the design is a metaphor for how the airport is a “sky-bridge”, connecting cities and countries.

Network Rail haved named Andrew Haines as their new chief executive, who will succeed Mark Carne.

Groupe3Architectes used clever design to create this new airport for the city of Guelmim, in Morocco. The new airport for the city, often referred to as the as the gateway to the desert, has a mesh, multi-coloured facade on it’s outside that filters out the searing sun to keep passengers on the inside cool, and small holes allow for ventilation.

Liverpool has drawn up plans to massively expand it’s business district, amidst decreasing vacant office space. The district currently covers 40 acres of land at the northern fringe of the city centre, and the development will see 400,000 square feet of new Grade A office space created, as well as a £100m investment in new road infrastructure. A planning application for a new cruise terminal at Princes Dock has also been submitted, which they wish to connect to the huge £5.5bn Liverpool Waters scheme already in the pipeline.

Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura has been awarded a Golden Lion for the best project on show at the Venice Architecture Biennale, while Switzerland has been lauded for curating the best pavilion.

London is the odd one out in terms of house prices around the UK, with prices in the capital falling further to minus 0.7%, the steepest fall since 2009. This contrasts to the rising rates for the rest of the UK, with the overall rate of house price inflation at 4.2%, with the highest rise in Scotland at 6.7%. Property experts say the fall in prices in London is due to buyers “smelling blood in the water” after years of non-stop rises.

Developer Dandara has unveiled it’s plans for a huge 340-flat build to rent scheme in Bedminster, just south of Bristol. The scheme will be a combination of one and two bed flats aswell as some affordable options.

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris have finished their puzzle flats that lie just below The Shard. The building consists of eight multi-level apartments and a large office space on the ground floor.

A report carried out by Dr. Ian Pearson has predicted that there will be a boom in drone use in construction. By 2025, Pearson said drones will be able to carry large materials up construction sites and he predicts that soon, construction drones will be as commonplace as cranes.

The New York housing market has appeared to stutter slightly as estate agents say that sales volumes in the first quarter of 2018 were at their lowest level for six years, and the median price per square foot was 18 per cent lower than a year earlier, according to some reports.

Several architects are voicing their opinion on the current state of architecture, with Sean Griffiths stating, “Architects are not really required for the nitty gritty of actual building any more”, and Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara of Irish studio Grafton claiming that architecture is under seige, “Today, the architect’s role often amounts to little more than window-dressing”.

Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners have completed a stunning distillery that sits into the Scottish hills of Speyside. Designed for Macallan, it sits on the Easter Elchies estate in Scotland, which has been home to the single malt whisky since 1824.

Dulwich in south-east London emerges as the area with the fastest growing property prices over the last 20 years, increasing by 1,150 per cent between January 1995 and September 2017, according to research by Knight Frank.

Osaka-based studio Ryuichi Ashizawa Architects have used traditional methods to shelter these residents from the heat in Okinawa Island. They have left large eaves to allow maximum airflow and the metal-mesh canopy which drapes down will be covered with plants for natural shelter to the sun, like a modern bivouac.
