The winner of this year’s RIBA International Prize for Best New Building is a school boarding facility in the Brazilian rainforest called Children Village. Able to house up to 540 children, the new build was said to be “reinventing Brazilian vernacular”, and wowed the judges as the architects worked with the children to make it as homely as possible.

“Children Village provides an exceptional environment designed to improve the lives and wellbeing of the school’s children, and illustrates the immeasurable value of good educational design,” said RIBA president Ben Derbyshire.

The RIAS has announced that a building designed by Reiach and Hall Architects to house an archive of the UK’s nuclear legacy has won Scotland’s best new building. It sits in a former RAF site in Wick on the north coast and employs around 2,000 people, who maintain the archives but they also assist with the far more private archive of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) – the government body set up to manage the cleanup of the UK’s civil nuclear industry – including records, plans and photos from over 17 facilities across the country.

Patrik Schumacher urges that he is not trying to remove the current executors from Zaha Hadid’s estate so he can have total control, but rather so he can appoint independent, professional executors. The executors he started legal proceedings against are Rana Hadid, Peter Palumbo and Brian Clarke, but he says “It was falsely reported that I want to control Zaha’s estate as sole executor…It was falsely alleged that my court action is about or motivated by personal financial gain.”
