The annual RIBA House of the Year has a 2019 winner in House Lessans, while several projects are announced and completed in New York this week.

This year’s winner of the prestigious RIBA House of the Year award goes to architects McGonigle McGrath for their work creating ‘House Lessans’, which the organisation described as a “dream home”. Situated in rural Northern Ireland, on an old farmstead in County Down, the minimalist and modern design was the favourite of the panel, which cost just £335,000 to make, equivalent to £1,425 per square metre.

RIBA Gold Medal winner, Ted Cullinan, has passed away at the age of 88. He  was awarded the 2008 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in recognition of his “inspirational practice and teaching”.

The huge, new South HeXi Yuzui Financial District in China is now set for construction, as firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture unveil the designs for the supertall tower, which will complete the total design for the district. Hoping to attract more tourism and business through the district, the new 500 metre tall skyscraper will become the focal point of the skyline.

It is not just us Brits that are struggling to come up with the cash to buy a home, as homeownership drops globally, with 22 of the 36 most developed countries experiencing a decline in the past 10 years, research from Swinton Insurance has found. However, the UK and Ireland saw the steepest decline of all, of 11% since 2008. Whereas in Australia, homeownership has increased by an enormous 86%!

A library with no books? That’s what Canadian architecture firm RDHA have created, setting a glazed volume into the limestone of an old post office in Cambridge, Ontario. The library will be a community centre, providing public services, with workspaces and playing host to events.

A stone clad residential blocks, covered in greenery has been designed by Jean Nouvel on the outskirts of the Ecuadorian capital, Quito. The beautiful looking 136,580-square-metre project has unbelievable facilities, from a rooftop pool, to privaste balconies and access to football, squash and tennis courts; areas designed for young children and teens; workspaces, a hairdressers, event spaces, a gym, spa and a swimming pool.

A new green and gold HQ for Disney is set to be built in New York by architecture firm SOM. The huge project will span an entire city block in Hudson Square, near Tribeca and SoHo, rising to 19 storeys.
