A vast arts complex in Hong Kong has been created out of the city’s former main police station, central magistracy, and prison, established by the British after they took control of the territory in 1841. Herzog & de Meuron added two new, modern looking buildings, while Purcell renovated the old colonial buildings, in what is the largest conservation project ever to take place in Hong Kong.

Another huge project is underway in Hong Kong at the moment, with UNStudio designed a huge new theatre, called the Lyric Theatre Complex. Situated in the West Kowloon Cultural District, the beautiful curved design will house a 1,450-seat Lyric theatre, the 600-seat Medium theatre, and a Studio theatre that seats 270.

The Law Commission has suggested the government expand the relatively unused ‘commonhold’ system, as an alternative to landlord leasing. The commonhold system means renters become members of a company that owns and manages the shared areas and structure of a building and there is no landlord. The commission suggests this could be a good alterntive to landlords, as they are becoming increasingly resented.

Snøhetta have revised their designs for Philip Johnson’s AT&T Building. The firms previous ideas for renovation faced a major backlash, who felt the changes were going to destroy the soul of the building, which then saw the building gain landmark status. This time the architecture firm aims to “preserve and revitalise” the historic building, keeping it the same at it’s core.
