HEKKTA’s Property Portal – Airports

Hitting the headlines this week is the architecture and design of airports. We often spend hours impatiently waiting in these vast terminals, but perhaps with huge firms such as Foster + Partners being contracted to build new terminals, these waits could be a little less painful…

Marseille Provence Airport is set to get the ‘missing piece’ to it’s puzzle in a new extension designed by Foster + Partners. It will link the 1990s extension designed by Richard Rogers with the original 1960s building. They have designed a large glazed hall, stylistically similar to their designs in Apple stores, featuring 22-metre-tall windows in an exoskeleton of stainless steel beams. This new hall will expand the airport’s capacity to 12 million passengers a year.

Due to rapidly increasing number of passengers Georgia’s Kutaisi International Airport terminal is set to get a ‘user-friendly’ extension by UNStudio, just four years after Ben van Berkel’s firm completed the terminal building in 2013. Numbers went over 300,000 in 2016 and are predicted to hit 1,000,000 by 2020, so the extension is certainly needed!
