AHEAD Middle East & Africa 2017 Hotel Design Awards

The winners of this year’s AHEAD Hotel Design Awards for the Middle East and Africa have been announced and as we enter the middle of winter, it’s giving us serious holiday envy. Take a look at some of the stunning designs that are making us double check winter flight prices.

The awards celebrate various aspects of hospitality design, with entries assessed on aesthetics, guest experience and commercial viability by a panel of judges comprising leading hoteliers, architects and interior designers.

AHEAD MEA HOTEL OF THE YEAR – The Four Seasons Hotel Dubai International Financial Centre 

The grand hotel in Dubai, designed by Tihany Design, took the Hotel Of The Year Award and also the Urban Hotel Award for bringing a “genuinely new sense of intimate luxury” to the Dubai hotel industry.

Jumeirah Al Naseem – Dubai

The five star hotel by Woods Bagot and DSGN was praised for blending indoor and outdoor spaces as well as the use of sliding screens to create rooms within rooms. The earned them the Guestrooms Award and the Resort Hotel Award.

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge – Botswana

This hotel won the award for Lodges and Tented Camps due to it’s careful consideration of the location along the Okavango Delta, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort – Oman

The winner of the Spa and Wellness category went to the Anantara Spa, which is on a cliffside. Yes please.

The Six Senses Zil Pasyon Resort – Seychelles

This stunning hotel (we think it’s our favourite) in the classically luxurious destination of the Seychelles won two awards; Landscape and Outdoor Spaces Award and also the Suites Award. Designed by Studio RHE, the resort won plaudits for its “seamless and sustainable” integration into the landscape.

Ibis One Central Hotel’s Cubano Lito Bar – Dubai 

The Bar, Club or Lounge Award was won (strangly enough) by an Ibis Hotel for its Cubano Lito bringing an essence of Havana.

More winners in the AHEAD 2017 awards were the Kempinski Summerland Hotel & Resort in Beirut, which scooped the award for Hotel Renovation and Restoration; Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa in Dubai, which won the Lobby and Public Spaces award, and Room Mate Emir in Istanbul was victorious in the Visual Identity of the Year category.

A worldwide winner will be decided in a Global Biennale in 2019.
